The word “veteran” has always been a focus in the hiring practices of businesses large and small. In 2014, there will be even more focus placed on hiring veterans. Over the years, 1st Mariner Bank has made an effort to employ several veterans and has experienced the value these individuals can add to a company. In 2014, 1st Mariner Bank is looking to increase the number of veterans hired because we know these individuals will be an asset to our company.
Over the past year, the Recruitment division of 1st Mariner Bank has been working diligently to improve its outreach process so that we can be more effective in reaching out to local veterans when we have job opportunities. On Thursday, November 21, 2013 we attended a conference at the Hilton BWI Airport called “Operation Pledge to Vets.” This event focused on how small- to medium-sized businesses can hire and retain veterans. There were many veteran resource representatives and local workforce centers present that were able to offer important information for Maryland companies looking to hire veterans.
In addition to the veteran and local workforce center representatives, there were two speakers, Leonard J. Howie III, Secretary of Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, and Anthony G. Brown, Lieutenant Governor. Both speakers discussed the importance of hiring veterans and how much value they can add to a company through their experience in the military.
There were many informational sessions provided for the businesses in attendance. These sessions included how to translate military skills into qualifications for job opportunities within the civilian workforce, how to use the Maryland Workforce Exchange website to recruit qualified veterans, and how to become a more “military-friendly” company. All of these sessions offered up a wealth of knowledge that the Recruitment division at 1st Mariner Bank will use.
Operation Pledge to Vets allowed companies to discuss current challenges they face when trying to bring on veterans, and veteran experts offered their advice on how to overcome these challenges. Attending the conference was an excellent way for the Recruitment division of 1st Mariner Bank to network with veteran experts and learn new and efficient ways to hire veterans. At the end of the conference, each employer made a pledge to hire and retain one veteran in 2014. But we hope we can exceed that number!
