With some simple preparation and easy online maintenance, you can help keep your private information out of harm’s way—online and off.

Make a copy of everything in your wallet and keep it in a safe place. 
If your wallet is ever lost or stolen, you’ll have everything you need close at hand, including account numbers and contact information, to quickly report your lost or stolen credit cards, driver’s license and more.

Take precautions with your PIN number.

• Keep your PIN (Personal Identification Number) private.
• Do not share it with others.
• Never keep it stored with your ATM card.
• Write it down and keep it in a safe place.

Get smart with passwords.

• Create complex passwords using a combination of upper and lower case letters, special characters and numbers. 
• Change your passwords regularly (at least every 90 days).

Be wary of online vendors.
Not all online vendors are safe. Make sure that sites are secure by looking for a lock icon on the address bar before entering private or secure information.

Never respond to emails asking for account or password information.

How secure is your home computer? Review the following tips to make sure you have the basic precautions covered.

• Make sure you’ve enabled your computer’s firewall.
• Install anti-virus and anti-spyware on your computer and keep them regularly updated with an auto-update function.
• Keep your Internet browser up to date. Using an outdated version of your favorite Internet browser puts your computer and your personal information at risk for security threats.
• Always log out of secure websites properly (e.g., never “X” out).
• Avoid using public computers for conducting online financial transactions.

Every month, review and update your privacy settings on all of your social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms.

• Shred all documents containing personal information, such as your bank account number and Social Security number.
• Review your credit report annually—visit annualcreditreport.com to obtain your free report from each credit bureau every year.
• Add your name to the National Do Not Call registry.
• Never print your driver’s license number on personal checks.
